Warehousing

Warehousing allows growers to store a commodity in their own name at a Viterra storage & handling site.  The grower can then defer a decision regarding the sale of the warehoused commodity until a later date, or can outturn the commodity for their use (a fee may apply).  Fees may be charged for the use of Viterra’s warehousing service, please refer to ruling 2009/10 Warehousing Charges and Terms & Conditions.

Warehousing provides many benefits for growers:

  • Option to defer and maximise marketing decisions
  • Ability to view deliveries and transfer grain via the ezigrain website
  • Reduced reliance on on-farm storage facilities
  • Avoidance of on-farm pesticide costs
  • Potential to obtain better freight rates due to outturn from Viterra facilities
  • Viterra provides quality storage and professional expertise in storage hygiene
  • Commodities are received by Viterra to acceptable industry standards
  • Safe and secure storage of commodities

How to warehouse

Warehouse deliveries must be delivered on your NGR grower card.  When delivering into a warehouse, you will be bound by Viterra’s ruling 2009/10 Warehousing Terms & Conditions (fees & charges).

Warehousing is available at most silos and terminals for most bin grades.  Limitations on warehoused receivals may occur if the storage units allocated for particular bin grades fill during harvest and where storage units may be restricted to approved buyers only.

Transferring ownership of a warehoused commodity

After a grower arranges the sale of all or part of their warehoused stock to a marketer, they can transfer their grain by contacting the Viterra Service Centre on 1800 018 205 or by using ezigrain. All transfers require approval from the marketer to which the warehouser is transferring grain.

Please note:  Viterra cannot control the speed that marketers respond to transfer requests, but does undertake to pass on the transfer request within 24 hours.  Where a marketer is slow to respond, Viterra will follow up and endeavour to accelerate the process.

When transferring, Service Centre staff will request:

  • NGR registration number
  • Buyer name and contract number
  • Commodity and individual weighnotes to be transferred

When all details have been obtained, warehousers will be issued with an order number over the phone. The order number confirms the order is pending. Growers must retain and quote this number for any enquiries relating to the transfer. The order number will appear on a confirmation letter received by the grower when the transfer has been processed.

The ezigrain website has also been enhanced to accommodate transfers of ownership online. You will be requested to enter the same information as outlined for Service Centre transfers. Please contact the Viterra Service Centre should you have any difficulties.

Please note that transfers will be effected on SHRUNK tonnage. However, grower payments should be based on UNSHRUNK tonnage. This should be confirmed with your buyer.

Shrinkage will apply to all commodities received, and will be levied at 0.6% per tonne for cereals and oilseeds, and 0.85% per tonne for pulses. Domestic outturns will be outturned as shrunk tonnage, (please confirm domestic outturn conditions in the ruling warehousing terms & conditions and conditions of restrictions apply).

To arrange the outturn of a warehoused commodity, growers should contact the site (or the applicable Business Centre) where the stock is held. At least one full working day's notice of an impending outturn is generally required.

Growers who outturn grain in their own name will be invoiced for the receival fee and any other applicable storage and handling charges.
